After an extensive review of the online lumber size monitoring systems available in the marketplace, Weyerhaeuser's Somass Division selected the SiCam™ RealTime System. The Somass sawmill is a large log coastal style operation. The headrig has a huge 10 foot bandmill. The secondary processors are large shifting saw edger and bull gang with a band resaw downstream. The mill processes cedar specialty products and has unique lumber size control challenges and demands.

Our objectives are to very accurately scan right after the machine center and reliably track the sawline that processes every board. To meet these objectives, the shifting saw edger, the bull gang and the resaw each require a multiple piece scanner.
We recommended an integrated SiCamT RealTime System with multiple piece profile (MPP) scanners and laser pairs (Hermary Opto LRS-50). Somass decided to implement the system under a phased approach. The shifting edger (MPP scanner) and fence gauge (Laser scanner) were the highest payback areas so we are installing them first. The next phases of the project will be the Headrig laser scanner) and Gang MPP scanner with the Resaw MPP scanner to follow. The Somass SiCam™ RealTime System is a good example of the right scanning technology for each scan center. The project includes an extensive training program for trades people, sawfilers, machine operators and management. This approach will allow Somass to maximize the financial impact from the SiCam™ RealTime System."
