Lumber size control systems deliver exceptional value to stud mills. With a steady diet of small logs, maximizing fiber recovery is critical. This is something the Millport team has known for years. Todd Buchanan of SiCam Systems Corporation has been working with Millport on various lumber size control initiatives. It soon became apparent that real-time lumber size control would deliver financial rewards. He states:

For Millport's SiCam™ RealTime project, we recommended MPP (multiple piece profile) scanners on their Canter line cant width and VSA gang stacks. Tracking every piece to its sawline is critical and these MPP scanners deliver a size control tool that single point lasers simply can't match for this application. The system also includes a laser pair on the edger outfeed monitoring widths and 2 laser pairs on the planer outfeed monitoring the thickness and width of every board produced. Rob had a clear understanding of what he wanted in the system and that definitely included sawline tracking on the VSA stack.
With the Millport installation proceeding in March 2005, new features are planned that will bring large financial impacts to the SiCamT RealTime stud mill application. We are very excited about this project. Replacing a competitor's system and getting our MPP scanners into a key mill in the south are both important steps. Millport is our 5 th Weyerhaeuser operation and for anyone who knows the history of real-time size control, that's a big win for SiCam Systems."
